Manned Space Flight To Mars: Stepping Into A New Age

On January 5th, 2018 humanity heads to Mars. The plan is for the trip to take 501 days, but this is entirely dependent on timing. Two professional US crew members will head out on this mission, preferably a man and woman, flying as private citizens on a “fast, free-return” mission.”

We’re stepping into a new age in space travel, the next great era of space exploration. There was a time when computers seemed like something out of science fiction, even people in their forties and late thirties remember being fascinated by computer technology. To our children though computers are so common, when a new PC or Apple brand comes out they don’t seem to be as impressed. Everyone has a computer now, it’s nothing special. The prediction is when our grandchildren are adults’ space travel will be the same as computers were to my generation; space travel will be so common place, everyone will have access to going beyond our planet. This next generation may be remembered as the age where science fiction became reality.

“Investments in human space exploration technologies and operations by NASA and the space industry are converging at the right time to make this mission achievable,” said Taber MacCallum, chief technology officer for Inspiration Mars. MacCallum is also CEO/CTO of Paragon Space Development Corporation.

The foundation released a “feasibility fact sheet” of an analysis regarding a manned Mars mission by 2018. This sheet includes mathematics that show a spacecraft launch aboard a Dragon capsule and a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket would be able to deliver the crew to the proper trajectory to make the trip to Mars. They’ve broken down everything from how much carbon dioxide would be produced, to how much solid waste would be produced during the journey. Inspiration Mars even included items such as “Feminine Health” in its analysis.

“We are confident that this mission is feasible, and this investigation did not reveal any showstoppers. We believe that the cost would be significantly less than previous estimates for manned Mars missions, and could be financed privately without relying on government funding,” the foundation said in the analysis.

“We also believe that with current and near-term technology it is possible to be ready for a Mars flyby launch in January, 2018 and that we should not pass on this mission since the next opportunity does not occur again until 2031.”

My generation may be remembered as the age when computers became widely available to the public, but with this increase in technological knowledge wisdom seemed to decrease. Our world entered into a time of war, (a war which lasted for over ten years), and there was an economic crisis (where upon graduation Generation Y was dumped into a recession), and to top it off there was a historical record for broken families where the majority of children grew up in single parent homes. As we step into the Space Exploration Era, perhaps many of the problems we see today could be resolved. Perhaps the next generation will be inspired by the new possibilities, and hopefully they’ll not make the same mistakes as my generation. As we go forward we must retain wisdom, for knowledge without wisdom is how we make troublesome inventions like the atom bomb and chemical warfare. Knowledge with wisdom is how we gain the written word, the toilet, seat belts, the computer, digital technology, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to name some. In summary the hope is in the next generation depending on the balance between knowledge and wisdom, instead of depending solely on technological knowhow.

On January 5th, 2018 a new path for us to follow will be cleared. A moral compass will be needed to guide all of us anywhere worth going, especially to other worlds. Without this our technological based knowledge will only lead us down a faster path to destruction.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued an international alert in September 2012 saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.”

“Testing for the new coronavirus should be considered in patients with unexplained pneumonias, or in patients with unexplained severe, progressive or complicated respiratory illness not responding to treatment," it said in a statement.

The WHO said on Monday that the confirmation of a new British case did not alter its risk assessment but "does indicate that the virus is persistent".

The British patient confirmed on Monday had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and is in intensive care in a separate British hospital, the HPA said.

Among the 11 laboratory confirmed cases to date, five are in Saudi Arabia, with three deaths; two are in Jordan, where both patients died; three are in Britain, where all three are receiving treatment; and one was in Germany in a patient from Qatar who had since been discharged from medical care.

The WHO said at this stage there is no need for travel or trade restrictions, or for special screening at border points.”

 What is leaving many angry and confused in America today? The answer is that intuitive feeling that they’re being played a fool, but they’re not sure how or why.

Inattentional blindness, also known as perceptual blindness, is failure to notice an unexpected stimulus that is in one's eyesight when other attention demanding tasks are being performed. Inattentional blindness is categorized as an attentional error and is not associated with any vision deficits. This typically happens because humans are overloaded with stimuli, and it is impossible to pay attention to all stimuli in one's environment. This is due to the fact that they are unaware of the unattended stimuli. Inattentional blindness also has an effect on people’s perception. There have been multiple experiments performed that demonstrate this phenomenon.

Does Anyone Remember Genie?

 

‘I am Genie...'

'I remember when I knew no better...the time when love was something my mama mentioned to me when she brought me food, but not something I understood.

"Love you Genie," she would say after feeding me. "Go sleep now Genie. She would pat my head then, sometimes. I liked it when she patted my head... Sometimes I would cry when she did. Not sure why...

I would listen to Daddy and Johnny sometimes and sometimes I laughed because I could imagine them talking to me, and patting my head like they did Nancy… I know they loved Nancy. They pet her head much. Puppy Nancy and I were loved, or I thought I was, before I knew what love was...Yeah...they loved Nancy when they patted her head...maybe not me though, not like the love I felt later.

I used to like the songs I would hear while I sat on my potty chair, trying to sleep. I found out later that a boy next door played piano, and that was the nice sounds I would hear sometimes. It would make me cry when I heard these songs… Everything was so pretty when I heard the songs...I knew love then, I think. The world was so pretty when I heard these songs. I remember looking at my friend; ‘shiny yellow coat’, while I was listening to the pretty music. I would rock my head and laugh too. So pretty, and I always looked forward to those times. I would pet ‘shiny yellow coat’ sometimes like she was puppy Nancy. She liked the music also.

I miss those times when I knew no better... I wish I never learned from where those songs came from.

I wish I never knew what love really was...When someone says they will help you and then they leave you; I have had many people do this to me.

I miss what I used to think love was... I miss my potty chair. I miss hearing the pretty songs some days which seemed to come from nowhere like magic. I miss getting patted on my head by mama when she cleaned me or fed me. I miss hearing Daddy and Johnny talking... I miss pretending that they be talking to me while they patted me and loved me like they did Puppy Nancy.

I miss not knowing better... I miss feeling safe, and knowing what was to come the next day... I miss there being no promises... promises are bad. I have the memories though and I pretend I know no better... At least people leave me alone now, and they don’t pretend to care anymore...’

 

(Genie now lives in a sheltered accommodation in an undisclosed location in Southern California; it is at least her sixth adult foster home. Her mother died in 2003.)

"Genie is the pseudonym for a feral child who spent nearly all of the first thirteen years of her life locked inside a bedroom strapped to a potty chair. She was a victim of one of the most severe cases of social isolation in American history. Genie was discovered by Los Angeles authorities on November 4, 1970.

Genie's discovery was compared extensively with that of Victor of Aveyron, about whom a film was made, The Wild Child. Psychologists, linguists and other scientists exhibited great interest in the case due to its perceived ability to reveal insights into the development of language and linguistic critical periods. Initially cared for in the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Genie later became the subject of acrimonious debate over where and with whom she should eventually live, moving between the houses of the researchers who studied her, to foster homes, to her mother's house, and finally to a sheltered home for adults with disabilities in California. Funding and research interest in her abilities eventually ceased. In 1994 a book was written about her case by Russ Rymer.

 Parents and child abuse

Genie's parents lived in Arcadia, California. Genie's mother was partially blind due to cataracts and a detached retina, and her father (who was 20 years older than his wife) was supposedly mentally unbalanced Genie was the fourth (and second surviving) child, and had an elder brother who also lived in the home.

When Genie was between 14 and 20 months of age and was just beginning to learn speech, a doctor told her family that she seemed to be developmentally delayed and possibly mildly retarded. Her father took the opinion more seriously than it was expressed by the doctor, apparently deciding that she was profoundly retarded, and subjected her to severe confinement and ritual ill-treatment in an attempt to "protect" her.

Genie spent the next 12 years of her life locked in her bedroom. During the day, she was tied to a child's potty chair in diapers; some nights, when she hadn't been completely forgotten, she was bound in a sleeping bag and placed in an enclosed crib with a cover made of metal screening. Indications are that Genie's father beat her with a large stick if she vocalized, and he barked and growled at her like a dog in order to keep her quiet. He also rarely allowed his wife and son to leave the house or even to speak, and he expressly forbade them to speak to Genie. By the age of 13, Genie was almost entirely mute, commanding a vocabulary of about 20 words and a few short phrases (nearly all negative), such as "stop it" and "no more."

 Rescue

Genie was discovered at the age of 13 when her mother left her husband and took Genie with her. On November 4, 1970, the two entered a welfare office in Temple City, California, to seek benefits for the blind. A social worker met them and guessed that Genie was 6 or 7 years old and possibly autistic. When it was revealed that she was actually 13, the social worker immediately called her supervisor, who then notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.Temple Station deputies responded, the parents were charged with child abuse, and Genie was taken to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Genie's mother, weak and almost blind, claimed she was herself a victim of abuse by Genie's father. The father committed suicide by shooting himself on the day both parents were to be arraigned on child abuse charges. Charges against the mother went forward in municipal court, but the judge refused to forward the charges to superior court.

Genie had a strange "bunny walk", in which she held her hands up in front, like paws. Although she was almost entirely silent, she constantly sniffed, spat, and clawed. Many of the items she coveted were objects with which she could play. In spite of her condition, hospital staff hoped they could nurture her to normality. When interest in the case widened, Genie became the focus of an investigation to provide evidence supporting the theory that humans have a critical age threshold for language acquisition. Within a few months of therapy, she had advanced to one-word answers and had learned to dress herself. Her doctors predicted complete success. They even screened François Truffaut's movie The Wild Child for ideas. Genie was initially moved out of the hospital to the home of Jean Butler, and later was moved to live with psychologist David Rigler, his wife and children, where she remained for four years.

 Characteristics and personality

Though initially nearly silent, Genie later learned to vocalize and express herself through sign language. Provided with few toys or objects to stimulate her, the majority of her time was spent in a dark room staring at a yellow plastic raincoat. After her rescue, attempts were made to help her speak and socialize. Her demeanor changed considerably, and she became social with adults she was familiar with. Colorful plastic objects became her favorite objects to collect and play with, and she demonstrated a deep fascination with classical music played on the piano (one of the neighboring children practiced piano regularly, and this was speculated to be the source of her fascination as it was one of very few sensations available to her). Genie developed remarkable nonverbal communication skills; repeatedly she and her caretakers were approached by strangers who would, without being asked, spontaneously give Genie gifts or possessions in which she exhibited an interest.

 First foster home

Jean Butler was Genie's teacher at Children's Hospital. Butler became Genie's foster parent by accident or by, as members of the Genie team suspected, a scheme that Butler concocted to allow Genie to stay with her. Butler claimed that she herself had a rash that was likely measles, and thus when Genie had visited her home, Genie may have contracted it. Genie was moved to Butler's home with the initial intent of a temporary quarantine, but the stay became prolonged when Butler petitioned to make it permanent. Butler became very protective of Genie and resisted visits by other members of the Genie team including Susan Curtiss and James Kent.

Butler's personal journal recorded concern that Genie was taxed too greatly by the Genie team and experiments; however, Butler didn't hide the fact that she hoped Genie would help make her famous. According to Curtiss, Butler frequently stated that she was "going to be the next Anne Sullivan." Her true intentions may never be known because she died in 1988, but many members of the Genie team claimed genuine affection for Genie and an overwhelming desire to "rescue" her.

Butler did, however, continue the essential practice of observing and documenting Genie's behavior while in her home. One such behavior Butler documented was Genie's practice of hoarding, a behavior typical of children who have been moved from abusive homes. When Butler applied to be Genie's legal foster parent, she was rejected.

 Second foster home

Genie returned to the hospital and was handed over to a new foster parent, therapist David Rigler. His wife, Marilyn, became Genie's new teacher. Marilyn found the need to teach Genie unconventional lessons, for example, in anger management. Genie would go into a fit of rage and act out against herself, so Marilyn taught Genie to "rage" through jumping, slamming doors, stomping her feet and generally "having a fit." Marilyn noted that Genie had a stronger command of vocabulary than most children acquiring language. During this period Genie was even able to discuss her years of abuse.

Marilyn Rigler: Where did you stay when you lived at home? Where did you live? Where did you sleep?

Genie: Potty chair.

Marilyn Rigler: You slept in the potty chair?

Genie: Mmm-hmm. Potty chair.

 

She stayed with the Rigler family for the next four years. During that period she began to learn some language, and the Riglers arranged for her to learn sign language. She also learned to smile. If she could not express herself in language, she would try to communicate by drawing pictures.

 Loss of funds and interest

Despite Genie's relative success, the National Institute of Mental Health, which had funded the project, grew concerned about the lack of scientific research data generated, as well as the unprofessional manner in which records were being kept. In 1974, the Institute cut off funding for the research. The following year the Riglers decided to discontinue their foster parenting. Genie had not yet learned full grammatical English and only went so far as phrases like "Applesauce buy store."

Later childhood

In 1975, Genie was returned to the custody of her mother, who wished to care for her daughter. After a few months, the mother found that taking care of Genie was too difficult, and Genie was transferred to a succession of six more foster homes. In some of the homes she was physically abused and harassed, and her development regressed severely. She returned to her coping mechanism of silence and gained a new fear of opening her mouth. This new fear developed after she was severely punished for vomiting in one of her foster homes; she didn't want to open her mouth, even to speak, for fear of vomiting and facing punishment again.

The original research team heard nothing more about Genie until her mother sued them for excessive and outrageous testing and claimed the researchers gave testing priority over Genie's welfare, pushing her beyond the limits of her endurance. The suit was settled in 1984.

Present condition

"Saeed was placed in solitary confinement for a period of more than six months and was repeatedly tortured (mentally and physically) in an effort to convince him to denounce his beliefs and his crimes on national television. He bravely refused to do so, and was sentenced to death on June 9, 2002. Saeed currently resides in Tehran's infamous Evin prison, awaiting execution."

Today marks one month since Pastor Saeed, a U.S. citizen, was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for his Christian faith.

His imprisonment and torture in Iran has created a "nightmare" for his wife and two young children here in America.

His wife, Naghmeh, has written a powerful and emotional post describing the pain and grace she has experienced through this situation. She wrote:

"It has been 9 months since Saeed kissed the little foreheads of our children as he said his goodbyes early in the morning of June 22, 2012. Nine months since Daddy sung to them and tucked them into bed, and 9 months since I embraced my husband as we said our goodbyes, thinking at the time we would be separated only a few weeks, as he returned to Iran to continue work on building an orphanage. Maybe if I knew what was to unfold, I would have held him a little longer, talked a little longer?"

Help Save Saeed Masouri

I am Mohsen Masouri, Saeed Masouri's uncle. The Islamic Republic of Iran is persecuting my nephew Saeed because of his beliefs, not his actions.

History:

In January of 2001, Saeed Masouri was arrested in Dezful, Iran, for having expressed opinions that support human rights and fundamental freedoms for the people of his country.

Saeed was placed in solitary confinement for a period of more than six months and was repeatedly tortured (mentally and physically) in an effort to convince him to denounce his beliefs and his crimes on national television. He bravely refused to do so, and was sentenced to death on June 9, 2002. Saeed currently resides in Tehran's infamous Evin prison, awaiting execution.

The hearing consisted of Saeed, a religious lawyer appointed by the court and a judge. This trial cannot be considered to have taken place in public by the standards of the international human rights instruments, which have been previously adopted by the government of Iran.

Amnesty International has expressed concern for the imminent execution of Saeed Masouri and has given their full support to this matter.

On behalf of Saeed and his family in Iran, Norway, Sweden and Canada, I urge you to sign this petition to assist in eradicating the unjust death sentence imposed on this innocent man.

Taliban Has Only Increased Malala Yousafzai's Drive.

                                
                               

The Taliban wanted to destroy this young woman, they wanted to make an example of her. They failed in every way, and this particular failure will be remembered as the spark. Now the flames will spread and many more young women like Yousafi will take a stand for their liberation. If the enemy is so stupid so as to attempt at doing something like this again, than perhaps they want to change the minds of the many world leaders who were ready to cease fighting them.

In these times when so many are confused about who is right and who is wrong, who’s a true hero and who’s a true villain, at least the Taliban is easy to recognize, and Yousafzai is easy to define. If you shoot a little girl in the head you're the bad guy. If you take a peaceful stand for freedom without having to add to the violence you’re the hero. If the Taliban does this kind of thing again then they can take credit for helping to unite much of the rest of world to a cause worth fighting for.

"Today you can see that I'm alive," Yousafzai said in a short video released on Monday. "I can speak. I can see you. I can see everyone."

Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban for her advocacy for girls' education rights, was released from a British hospital last month.

"I'm getting better day by day," she said. "It's just because the prayers of people, because all the people—men, women, children, all of them, all of them—have prayed for me. And because of these prayers God has given me this new life. And this is a second life. This is a new life.

"I want to serve," Yousafzai, wearing a traditional headscarf that hid any scars from the bullet, added. "I want to serve the people. And I want every girl, every child, to be educated."

She then announced the launch of the Malala Fund to support education for all girls.

The Taliban said they targeted her because she promoted "Western thinking," according to the Associated Press, but the attempt to murder a teenage girl over her desire to go to school sent a wave of revulsion around the world.

Yousufzai was nominated for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.
